Enforces Local Law 1-2010: "Dog Licensing and Control Law for the Town of Wells" as well as NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets law.
The Dog Control Officer will pick up stray dogs, address barking complaints, biting complaints etc. Complaints must be made in writing.
NOTE: Under NYS Penal law 210.45 it is a crime punishable as a class A misdemeanor for any person, in and by a written instrument, to knowingly make a false statement or to make a statement that such person does not believe to be true.
In accordance with the Local Law ALL dogs four months of age and older that are owned or harbored 30 days or longer in the Town of Wells must be licensed.
A dog license must be obtained at the Office of the Town Clerk.
Cost is $5.00 for a spayed/neutered animal, and $10.00 for all others. An up-to-date Rabies Certificate and, if applicable, proof of spay or neuter is required when applying for a dog license.
In accordance with the local law, leashes are required on all animals not on their own property. Town Law also specifies that dogs may not be a nuisance to others and clean up after dogs is required when walked off the owners property. Signs are placed along Main St. to remind owners of this responsibility.
